★Mercedes-Benz 250 (W114) 1969 model year
The W114 was a compact model sold from 1968 as the successor to the W110. It was developed under the company slogan "the best or nothing". Although it was treated as an entry-level model at the time, it was known for its extremely high durability, with no compromises made in its construction or finish.
The styling was done by car designer Paul Bracq, and the car had a spacious interior and was equipped with crush zones and a steering column to absorb the impact of an accident, improving safety.
There were two models, a sedan and a coupe, with three engine sizes: 2.3L, 2.5L, and 2.8L.
The transmission was a column-shift 4-speed automatic, and the in-line 6-cylinder SOHC engine had a displacement of 2496cc and produced 131ps.
A minor change was made in 1973, but this vehicle is an early model before the minor change, and is characterized by a double bumper and triangular window at the front.
◆About this vehicle◆
D car (Western Motor Vehicles, a group company of Yanase), purchased in July 2021 at an old Mercedes specialty store, unknown owner history, no instruction manual or manual, non-smoking vehicle, maintenance records available, stored in an indoor garage with a body cover, unknown accident history or repair history, ETC, spare key available
*Model number: 114010, engine model number: 114, chassis number: 114010-12037●●●
◆Exterior◆
The early model features triangular windows, a double front bumper and flat rear tail lenses.
The body color is ivory white; although it is unknown when, it was completely repainted by the previous owner, and the color matches the classic W114.
Looking at the plate in the engine bay, the colour code is 040, so the original colour appears to have been black.
It is in good condition with no scratches or dents.
There is only a little rust on the underside, but it is in good condition for a 55-year-old car.
The plating has a nice shine and is well balanced with the paint.
The exterior has been kept in its original condition, giving a sense of the atmosphere of the time.
The original wheel caps, painted the same color as the body, have some color peeling on the right front and rear.
The ribbon type tire is MAXXIS MA-P3, 185/70R14, with about 60% tread depth.
◆Interior◆
The interior of the car is in its original condition except for the car navigation system and audio.
The classic handle has cracks all over it, but they have a new one so they will include it.
The front and rear seats have been reupholstered with a grey MB-Tex kit that reproduces the original, and the floor carpet has also been replaced with grey fabric that reproduces the original.
The floor mats are yellow checked, but the light grey mats in the same colour as the seats have been kept.
The AT is a 4-speed column-mounted transmission, and unlike the MT, there's no need to shift frequently, so I don't think it's difficult to use.
The air conditioner is installed in the trunk and is an original Nippon Denso unit that is still in use.
The air outlets are only in the rear, not the front, but it still worked well even in temperatures over 33°C.
The refrigerant gas used is R134a, but due to the long piping, there seems to be a gas leak, so it needs to be recharged every season.
Overall condition is good, but the dashboard has small cracks and deterioration of the plastic cover, and the driver's door handle is worn.
◆Engine/Maintenance◆
The engine starts with light cranking and idles smoothly.
There is no strange noise or odor, but there is some oil seepage.
The odometer reading is not guaranteed and should only be considered a reference value.
At the time of purchase, the car had been serviced at a shop specializing in old Mercedes, and even after purchasing it, it has been serviced at another shop specializing in old Mercedes.
There are no complete maintenance records, but the most recent major ones are listed below.
・Windshield replaced
・Front brake caliper overhaul
・Front brake rotor replaced
・AC compressor changed from yoke to rotary type
・AC hose newly made and replaced
・Ignition replaced with 123
It will be.
There is also some shift shock in the automatic transmission, but my doctor says that this can be fixed by adjusting the carburetor.
◆A word from the owner◆
I have driven a variety of old cars up until now, but I had never driven a Mercedes, so I was looking around and found this 114 that was on consignment at a store specializing in old Mercedes Benz.
The deciding factor for me to buy it was that it was in good condition and had been well maintained, and I had been planning to take it on leisurely trips with my wife, but due to various circumstances I had to buy a new car, so I decided to sell it.
I really like it and I don't have any space to store it, so I'm not in any rush to sell it, but I would be willing to give it to anyone who wants it.
◆Personal impressions from Ensu no Mori's reporter◆
The owner is a regular at Ensu no Mori.
He has bought and sold many cars with character at Ensu no Mori, and this time he featured this W114.
I also heard that he had purchased a new car, and it turned out that he had purchased it from Enthusiast Forest.
My impression after looking at it was that it seemed like there was little risk
of spending a lot of money after purchasing it , which is common with older cars.
One way to enjoy a car is to buy a cheap car and slowly fix any defects while driving it, but I think this is difficult unless you have some knowledge of how to take care of old cars and are able to tinker with cars yourself.
I often hear stories of people who have to take their car to a shop every time it breaks down, and before they know it, the repairs have cost several times more than the original purchase price.
In that sense, the body of this car is in good condition, the interior has been restored, and it appears to have been maintained for many years at a store specializing in old Mercedes, so you can be assured of its quality.
The so-called "vertical-eyed Benz" is the last in this series, but parts are still available, so if you're looking for one, be sure to consider this one.
